Escape the Library: Poe’s Study: A STRONGER Minds One Book Challenge

The Setting

The Anna C. MacKay museum in Chelmsford is home to the once study of the poet Edgar Allan Poe. He wrote such stories as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Raven. Although known for his feats of literature, Poe was also a master of cryptography. It is using this knowledge of puzzles and logic that Poe was able to hide his last bit of wealth in his study. Your team has 60 minutes to locate and unlock the secret treasure of Poe’s Study using the clues he left behind in the room.

FAQ’s

What is an escape room?
An escape room is a challenge where teams have 60 minutes to work together to solve a series of logic puzzles and clues to lead to an end goal. Teams are encouraged to search the room, look for clues, be creative, communicate and use their brainpower to “escape”.

Will I be locked in a room?
No, you will never be locked in the room, in fact the area in MacKay we are using does not have doors. Instead, your objective is to find and unlock his treasure.

Who is the escape room suited for?
The room is suited for adults and teens over the age of 14.

Do I have to have a team of 6-8 to play?
The room is built for teams of 6-8. You do not have to have a team to participate; others will join the timeslot until it is full. Choose a time slot on our online calendar and make sure that there are enough slots left for your party, then register everyone in your party.

What does this cost?
This escape room is free and open to all!

Is this scary?
Absolutely not!

Is that story about Poe real?
Nope. We made it up to add to the fun atmosphere!

Do I need to know all about Poe?
While knowledge of Poe and his publications may help (and we librarians encourage you to learn), no prior knowledge is necessary for you to “escape”. All information you will need will be in the room with you.

When should I arrive?
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time slot for a brief intro and explanation.

Are there any physical limitations?
While none of the clues require brute force, the escape room will take place on the second floor of MacKay, which is not currently handicap accessible.

Do I have to register ahead of time?
Yes. In order to ensure our teams have enough people, you will have to register online or by calling us in order to play. If you cannot make your timeslot, please let us know so that people on the waiting list can have a chance to play.

Should I tell my friends about this?
Yes! While you should not spill the secrets of how to get out, definitely tell your friends if you had a good time!

What happens if we “escape”?
If your team finds his treasure, you will be rewarded! You will also get a group photo taken and go on our leaderboard!
