Meet the Artist - Dan Holmes
Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 at 7 p.m.

at the Chelmsford Library

This September the display case in the Library's lobby will feature the unique works of Dan Holmes. We know you'll have lots of questions once you've seen his fun artwork so we've invited him to stop in and talk about his art at the end of the month - just before he takes the display down. Plan to stop in and meet this artist. We know you will be inspired!

Portrait of the artist:

Daniel J. Holmes is a decorated retired Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force who is currently on a special assignment at the Sagamore Hill Radio Solar Observatory, in Hamilton Massachusetts.   Among his many interests, he has created art objects from recycled metal, wood and discarded bells and buzzers into a unique kind of whirlygig.  He enjoys making one of a kind, interesting looking, pieces that fascinate onlookers. He is the first to admit that many of his pieces have no purpose other than to entertain and fascinate his viewers.  He is an alumnus of the North Street Bennet School in Boston where he learned how to make violins and cellos among other things.  He explains that making his sculptures keeps boredom from setting in.

His professional resume allows no room for boredom! Master Sergeant Holmes completed training in Aircraft Environmental System and has worked all over the world including Thailand, Diego Garcia, Mildenhall England, Osan Korea, Beale AFB CA.  He cross trained into the Weather Maintenance career field and worked as an instructor for the Weather Maintenance Technical Training Center and supported an Optical and Radio Solar Observatory in Hawaii. While performing duty at Palihua, he was decorated for warning families living in a remote part of Oahu of an advancing forest fire.  There were no fatalities but the fire burned almost a quarter of the island.

Sergeant Holmes's military decorations include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, National Defense Medal with a Bronze Star, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 6 devices, AF Overseas Long and Short Tour Ribbons, Professional Military Education Ribbon with one device, AF Outstanding Unit Award with one device, AF Excellence Award and the AF Longevity Award with 4 devices.

We at the Library are happy that Daniel Holmes is allowing us to decorate the Library this fall (in August and September) with a display of his unique sculptures in the Cultural Council's Display Case in the lobby at the main library.  He has agreed to visit the Library in September to talk about his craft and show us some of his larger pieces that didn't fit in the display case.  We hope you will be able to join us Thursday, September 26, at 7 p.m.
