George Chen
"Flower and Bird Series" - Chinese Paintings by Oil
Reception: Saturday, March 7, 2009
Reception at 2 p.m. and concert at 3 p.m. with Zhi-Min Zhao, Erhu Master

George Chen uses oil paints on canvas to express his interpretation of traditional Chinese images. He has an exceptional talent of imitating Chinese masterpieces and executing images he recalls from paintings he saw in his childhood.

George was raised in Viet Nam where his father, a Chinese businessman had moved his family. While in Viet Nam, George was enrolled at the Century Art School in Saigon and worked with great artists. In 1984, he moved to Lowell MA with his wife, Joyce. He worked for a while painting and decorating furniture for a high end furniture manufacturer in Massachusetts until that company experienced an economic downturn in 2001. Since then George has been busy creating beautiful images on canvas with oil paints many that he has developed on his own. He uses non-traditional techniques like wiping sandpaper over dried oil paint to create just the right texture to make an Asian camel or horse come to life.
