Artist’s Statement

Art making, for me, is not mainly about what I choose for a subject. I follow an idea in a consistent way, especially with Still Life, but I go from Landscape to Still Life to Figurative. I paint Landscape (when life and my kids will let me!), in the spring and summer, and Still Life and most of my Portrait and Figurative work in the winter, when I have to be inside.

I paint and draw because I love to paint and draw. I love to make lines and shapes and colors and work with paint and move it around. I want to try my best to see things in nature that are there if you can discover them, and to somehow put these impressions into a solid form so that others can feel them. I want, for instance, to put real air in a landscape, so that you can feel the breeze or the shade or the heat. This, for me is seeing the truth that is there and communicating these sensations. This is what I love to do and think about and what Art is to me.
