MISSION STATEMENT AND PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

MISSION STATEMENT

Budget Buddies seeks to improve the financial literacy and security of low-income women in the Greater Lowell area. The program combines one-on-one mentoring with classes on budgeting, banking, and credit.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Agency Partners:
Budget Buddies is an independent, non-profit organization focused on the financial education of lower-income women. We plan to work through social agencies in the Greater Lowell area that serve women who are homeless, victims of abuse, or fighting addiction -- as well as seniors and girls aging out of foster care.

Each agency will have its own program, tailored to the specific needs of its clients as determined through client focus groups. Program participants will be recommended by the partnering agencies, using a list of eligibility criteria that we create together.

Classroom Instruction
One-hour client workshops on budgeting, managing bank accounts, and establishing credit will be available, as appropriate, and customized for each agency program. Every attempt will made made to use peer trainers who have “been there.” Budget Buddies will train the trainers, who will receive a small stipend, and provide all instructional materials. Where possible, classes will be held at the offices of the referring agency.

Mentoring
Each agency partner will be responsible for finding a majority of the volunteer mentors who will provide ongoing, one-on-one support to supplement the classroom instruction. Budget Buddies will provide a mentor screening form and recruit additional mentors from other community sources. Mentoring will take place at the partner agency offices.

Mentors will receive upfront training as well as ongoing support under the guidance of a mentor coordinator. They will commit to working with clients for six months and complete both an upfront action plan with the client and an exit questionnaire. The mentoring coordinator will help the agency partner pair mentors and clients.

Additional Services
Budget Buddies hopes to partner with a local financial institution to obtain discounted checking and savings accounts and credit cards. Other possibilities include individual development accounts, designed for lower-income savers. Also important will be referrals to other reputable providers -- such as credit counseling firms.
