"Confederates
in the News: Tony Horwitz as Journalist and Historian"
presented by Professor Michael Pierson
Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 7 p.m.
This talk will look at Tony Horwitz's unique
ability to blend past and present into stories well worth reading. Focused
on his most famous book, "Confederates in the Attic," the presentation
will consider what makes the book compelling both as a work of journalism
about present-day America, and as an accurate rendering of important parts
of our nation's past.
Michael Pierson is Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts,
Lowell. He has written two books about the Civil War era, and is currently
at work on a manuscript entitled "Lt. Spalding Writes Home: A Comic
Civil War Letter and What It Tells Us About Death, Sex, Humor, Drinking,
and the Work that Historians Do." He is a member of the Chelmsford
Friends of the Library.
