at the Chelmsford Public Library

The Chelmsford Public Library will begin its “First Sundays” concert series on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 with a performance by Boston-based keyboardist, Shuann Chai, in the library's meeting room.

Shuann Chai’s recent performances include recitals at Steinway Hall of Seattle, the Cataumet Arts Center (Cape Cod), St. Peters Church in New York City, and collaborative concerts on the Embassy Series in Washington DC and the Norwegian Seamen’s Church with cellist Aage Kvalbein. She was also the soloist for the Schumann and Tchaikovsky Concertos at the Gliere Academy of Kiev, Ukraine, and has played live on WGBH Boston (with cellist Pieter Wispelwey), NPR Vermont, and Radio-Sherbrooke.

Ms Chai has also collaborated with the Avenue of the Arts Chorale as the organ soloist in Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and played continuo in numerous Oberlin Conservatory productions of Baroque and early Classical works. As a harpsichordist she has been broadcast on Radio-Canada and performed at Boston’s historical Old South Meeting House with soprano Elizabeth Keusch.

This past year Shuann has also performed over 100 concerts and lecture-recitals in public libraries and senior communities with wide-ranging repertoire on both the modern piano and her 1775 Stein fortepiano (replica by Philip Belt).

Shuann's upcoming concerts include a series of tours with the Min Ensemble of Norway and solo recitals at the Hatchlands estate in southwest London, the Axminster Concert Series (Devon, England), and the Frederick Collection of Historical Keyboards.

Shuann completed her undergraduate work in her hometown at Oberlin College, majoring in Piano Performance and Biology. After choosing music over medical school, she moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory.

Presently Shuann is completing a Ph.D in Musicology at Brandeis University, where she was awarded the Gershwin Foundation Prize. When time allows, she and her husband David enjoy reading, cooking, and cheering for the Boston Red Sox.

The Chelmsford Library's "First Sundays" concert series is funded by the Chelmsford Friends of the Library. The free concert series runs on the first Sunday of each month from January through April.
Upcoming concerts scheduled are:
February 4, 2007: New Piano Quartet, chamber ensemble
