Preschool storytime was so much fun today! We started with Cynthia Rylant’s In November, a lovely book about one of my favorite months.Image of item

After pretending to be turkeys for a bit, we moved on to Gobble Gobble Crash! A Barnyard Counting Bash by Julie Stiegemeyer. This silly book has the turkeys causing a ruckus on the farm. When the farmer wakes up, the other animals help the turkeys hide. We had fun searching for the hiding turkeys together.

Image of itemSince we were already on the farm, we moved on to Moo! by David LaRochelle. This is one of my favorite books to read aloud. There are only two words in the book but the way you read them helps Image of itemshow how important tone and inflection are to how we communicate with language.

Todd Parr’s The Thankful Book finished out our storytime today. I’m so thankful that you joined me. See you next week!

Books for Preschoolers on Wed., Nov. 16

Image result for runaway rabbit ron marisRunaway Rabbit by Ron Maris started us off today. We followed the Image of itemrabbit as he encountered other animals all around the farm. After this reading, we had fun with the motion song, “Little Bunny Foo Foo” – check out this version! After the Good Fairy turned Little Bunny Foo Foo into a goon, we read a story about a cat that gets turned into something else, Lynne Berry’s The Curious Demise of the Contrary Cat.

Image of itemImage of itemThis grumpy pet led us into our next book, The Grumpy Pets by Kristine A. Lombardi. We practiced grumpy and happy faces as we read about Billy finding the perfect pup for him! We segued into Bow-Wow Wiggle Waggle by Mary Newell DePalma, a fun read-aloud full of onomatopoeia.

Image of itemAfter our rocketship trip to the moon, we watched a farmer take a trip around the farm on his tractor with Will Hillenbrand’s Down by the Barn. The children were very observant during our reading and noticed the plot building in the background of the pictures.

Early literacy tip: picturebooks use the relationship between the Image of itemwords and pictures to tell their stories – even pre-readers can help “read” a picturebook by pointing out what they see in the pictures! Try asking your child a simple question: “What’s happening in this picture?” Follow it up with, “What do you see that makes you say that?” to have them practice their narrative skills! For more on this type of reading, head to The Whole Book Approach or check out Reading Picture Books with Children by Megan Dowd Lambert.

Thanks for joining me for storytime! See you next week!

Image of itemToday’s Preschool Storytime books had a common theme: the moon! We started with Ida Pearle’s The Moon is Going to Addy’s House. After watching the moon follow Addy home, we watched a poor kitten try to catch the “little bowl of milk in the sky” in Kevin Henke’s award-winning Kitten’s First Full Moon.

Image of itemImage of itemOne Moon, Two Cats by Laura Godwin was followed up by a flannel board of Mae & the Moon by Jami Gigot. We watched as the moon got smaller and then bigger again in the night sky.

Image of itemAfter building our own rocket ships with our trusty hammers and flying to the moon like Mae, we settled in for one more story: Gabriel Alborozo’s The Mouse and the Moon.

Thank you for joining me for storytime! See you next week!
