We offer proctoring for anyone needing to take a test or exam, whether for school, employment, or personal enrichment. The proctoring coordinator is Todd Bowser. Schools or students with questions can direct them to Todd through our reference email at email hidden; JavaScript is required or 978-256-5521 x1134.

Students should review these guidelines with their instructors prior to booking a testing appointment. Also, please share our contact information (below) with your instructor.

  • We request that all proctoring appointments be arranged at least a week prior to the exam. We recommend booking two to four weeks prior to the exam. Our private study rooms are available to the public for many purposes, and may be reserved up to 30 days in advance.
  • There is no charge for exam proctoring.
  • Our regular time limit for room reservations is two hours. Students should consider that any additional time needed for an exam is a special request requiring more advance notice.
  • Students should plan to have setup time prior to the start of the exam, [i.e., if the test should begin at 11 a.m., we recommend reserving the room for 10:45 to allow for setup time.] Other study room users will not be disturbed ahead of the scheduled end of their booking.
  • Requests for multiple exams will be treated as individual requests. Due to the changing demands of regular library business, we may not be able to accommodate all requests. We are not able to accommodate an entire class worth of tests.
  • We are not able to administer multiple tests at a time, whether simultaneous or overlapping.
  • Exams may be taken at any time between 30 minutes after the library’s opening and 30 minutes before closing - between 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday - subject to the availability of staff and space.
  • We request that instructors submit exam materials 48 hours ahead of the testing time.
  • Staff will submit exams back to the institution by the next business day.
  • Staff will require photo identification as needed by the testing institution.Staff may collect items such as phones or bookbags containing any items restricted from use or not needed by the student for the duration of the exam. Any member of our reference staff may proctor an exam.
  • Staff will start and stop each exam at the specified time.
  • Reference staff provide this service while working a busy public desk. We are not able to provide close monitoring and staff will not be in the room at all times with the student. When possible, students may be observed by staff periodically throughout the exam. Due to shift changes throughout the day, we cannot ensure the same staff member will administer the exam in its entirety.
  • The library allows conversation and we cannot guarantee quiet conditions during proctoring. Our study rooms are not soundproof, but the doors may be closed to minimize distractions.
  • We have wireless internet access and public laptops available for students to use if necessary. However, we are unable to download additional software to our machines or patrons’ personal devices. If special software is needed, students must bring their own devices with any necessary programs installed.
  • Aside from testing materials provided by the instructor or school, students should bring all materials and supplies needed for testing.
  • Staff have access to a fax machine or scanner for submitting completed exams at no charge. Exams provided by instructors will be printed as needed for no charge. All other expenses associated with proctoring, including copying, printing, and postage are the responsibility of the student. An addressed stamped envelope must be provided by the student for materials that need to be mailed.
