March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

The National Education Association suggests reading a book today in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  We don’t have to read a book by Dr. Seuss himself.  In fact, it is better to read a book by a different author than to watch a film by Dr. Seuss today.

At storytime, after reading books, we had a piece of birthday cake to celebrate the day.

We read one Dr. Seuss book in both the toddler and preschool storytimes:  The Foot Book.  Children helped stamp with their left and right feet.  This book has simple vocabulary and is shelved in our Easy Reader section.

Sometimes a picture of The Cat in the Hat appears on the spine of a book, and on the back, but the book was not written by Dr. Seuss.  I read one of those books to the preschool group.  It is Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman.
I love the goofy pictures and the simple text as well as the emphasis on colors, numbers, opposites and dogs!

Continuing our celebration of the Lunar New Year, we read Let’s Count Goats! by Mem Fox, illustrated by Jan Thomas.  Those goats did a lot of crazy things, but we were able to count them all.

Everyone was tricked by the twist in the story The Doghouse by Jan Thomas. It was a pleasant surprise that ended with cake, so we ended our storytime with birthday cake.
